How I Wrote Our First Grade Curriculum…..

How I wrote our first grade curriculum …….
I guess the bigger question, is why I decided to write my own curriculum?
We tried and researched several different curriculums and none of them seemed to work for us.   Two of the biggest things were cost and too many worksheets etc.

One of the advantages to homeschooling, is that my child does not have to be a cookie in the schools cookie cutter curriculum.  I can tailor a curriculum to suit his style of learning.  Like most children, he enjoys learning while playing.

My first step to building out curriculum was to find out what my state (Texas) required that I teach him.  I went online to the Texas Homeschool Coalition Association which gave me a information on the requirements to homeschool in my state.  I then wanted to find out what is being taught in my state for each subject by going to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Grade 1.    This website gave me a detailed list of what is taught in grade 1 math, reading, spelling and more.

Zearn Math

Standard

I have tried several textbook and on-line  math curriculums.
I realized that my son learns better with an online curriculum rather than a textbook.
After a lot of research, I decided that I want to teach my son using the Singapore math method.

Now, to find an online curriculum using the Singapore math method.
In my search, I found Zearn.org.  This is an amazing FREE math curriculum.
Each lesson has a video, games and a worksheet.  For us, this is an amazing find.

We are using Zearn.org as our main curriculum and online games, questions, tests and some worksheets.  I was not able to find any documentation that states that Zearn is based on Singapore math but the number bonds and other grade 1 materials are the same.

I signed up as a teacher/school because homeschools in the state of Texas are considered private schools (I have a school name etc.).  Here is the link to sign up as a parent (the materials appears to be the same)  Zearn.org

Daily Morning Bedroom Routine

Standard

After a hard day, we all like to end our day in a clean and organized home.
Your bedroom, needs to be a place that is inviting and relaxing. With a simple quick morning routine, you can relax and retire to that relaxing place.

In my VLOG, I share my simple morning routine. The most important task is to make your bed. In one of my previous posts, I shared how using a duvet and bottom sheet only will help you make a bed quick and easy.

Dinosaurs Grade 1 Science

dinosaurs

I personally do not think that learning about dinosaurs is important unless he wants to be a paleontologist.  So, why am I including the history of dinosaurs into our science curriculum?  My son thinks dinosaurs are cool!  The information itself may not be useful, but learning to read and write about subjects that he likes makes learning fun!

We really like the book series ………..”What do dinosaurs…..” by Jane Tolen & Mark Teague.  These books do not tell the history of dinosaurs but have great behavior lessons in them.  These are also, great books for beginning readers.
